The Death of Marat by Jacques Louis David. Favorite work of art to-date.  The piece may depict a death scene,but it is all placed in the bottom half of the canvas.  The top half of the canvas provides relief from the death.  Also due to warm black coloring, it contrasts from the deathly pale skin of Marat.  Overall the whole scene, manages to remain calm and serene, even with a dead man draped over a tub.
